The day before we left for the cruise Kenna came home from school complaining about her toe hurting. It was really red and I couldn't even touch it. Turns out she had an ingrown toenail. I'm glad we caught it before the cruise. The antibiotics cleared it up in 2 days!
That night, Kenna also had a musical performance at school. It was pretty cute. It was something about Miss Muffet and things that squirm. We dumped Callie with a babysitter and got to watch her sing and do the actions in peace. She nailed her part:
So I guess things that make us squirm are sometimes good.
I'm glad there are bats in my neighborhood.
Snakes and spiders, worms and bats,
We need them all. Now how about that?
She is most definitely Nate's child. She knew the songs and the actions but was much more interested in looking around and by the time the 40 minute performance was over I could tell she was definitely ready to be done!
Fast forward past the cruise to Thanksgiving break. Lucky Kenna got to miss two weeks of school.
We took a trip to the zoo on Monday. The girls got to experience nature at its finest when they saw a chimpanzee carrying around a dead squirrel. That led to some questions I didn't quite have the answers to which included whether or not the chimp would eat the squirrel. I didn't think so but I didn't know. Fun times.
Still with the thumbs up. I love it!
Tuesday Kenna and Callie had a play date with a friend. Her friend has a playset in her backyard. Remember in the spring when Kenna dislocated her elbow when she fell off the monkey bars? I told her then that she wasn't allowed to do the monkey bars ever again. She didn't listen. She did the monkey bars at her friend's house.
Later she told me she thought she could skip a rung but then accidentally skipped two and fell off. She said she heard a pop.
My friend called me and told me Kenna had fallen, she felt terrible, but let's face it...it would have happened if I'd been standing under the monkey bars waiting to catch Kenna.
I went to pick her up and had a bad parenting moment. I didn't feel too sorry for her because she was on the monkey bars when she wasn't supposed to be and also because I figured she just dislocated her arm again. We got in the car and headed to the doctor, which was when I started to think something more was wrong. Kenna screamed every time I hit a bump and we had to slow way down.
I helped the doctor peel her shirt off and saw that her arm was swollen and bruised, so the doc sent us to the hospital and told us on the way out not to give her anything to eat or drink in case they had to any "intervention."
The children's hospital was great. Nate met us there and Jarom took Callie home. Kenna got an x-ray, two stuffed animals, a temporary splint and a sling out of the visit. They told us she had broken one of the nubs in her elbow, but didn't need surgery, and sent us home with a referral to an orthopedic.
The first two days were rough. She was in a lot of pain, the splint was heavy, she hated the sling, didn't like having to tone down her activity, and the swelling in her arm was bad. We had to cut the splint in a couple places to give her some relief. She was a trooper though and we kept promising her it would get better when she got her permanent (or permative as she kept calling it) cast.
The next day we were getting in the car and all the sudden I hear her say, "I think I just lost my tooth!" I turned around and sure enough she had. She'd been trying to buckle with one arm by holding the seat belt with her mouth and out popped her tooth. Luckily we found it on her lap.
We made it though Thanksgiving and had a great time with our friends. Our elf on the shelf showed up and before we knew it it was time to go back to school. Boo.
Kenna put her fake elf next to the real one so it could have a friend.
Tuesday morning we headed to get her 'permative' cast. They took another x-ray and the doctor said the fracture didn't show up, but it had all the other symptoms of a fracture, so they were going to treat it like one, since it meant there was one in 85% of cases. She was still really swollen and all I could think was how much it looked like Nate's elbow when he tore his UCL. I'm glad it wasn't that.
The tattoos are left over from the disney cruise and they didn't want to irritate the skin by scrubbing them off, so they'll probably still be there for Christmas.
She picked out a puppy print cast. Her first pick was for cheetah or leopard print but they didn't have that. She has been selectively letting people sign her cast since then and is much happier because it is lighter and the pain is gone. She'll even have it off in time for Christmas!
