Man Weekend

I realize that I named this post "man weekend" and that there is nothing manlier about a man weekend than blogging about it, but it was too much of an adventure to not blog about.  I was able to convince all of my old roommates from college to fly out to Utah for a much needed man weekend.  We all asked our wives for permission and they were all surprisingly permissive.  They thought it was a fantastic idea and Kenzie even said that she was jealous.  I decided that Kenna could come with me and spend some time out there with her gramma and Anna.  Those are her two favorite people in the world.  Actually I think that she loves Anna more than either me or Kenzie.

We woke up early and Jarom took us to the airport on his work from home day (he is the best).  We were able to catch our flight without a hitch and Kenna stole the ipad and the bose noise reduction headphones from me and she told me "you have your phone daddy or you can read that magazine (Skymall)".  She is spoiled rotten.  She asked me questions the whole flight over and there were some that I could not answer.  "Why can't you have your tray down when we are landing or taking off?" or "Why would we go swimming if the plane fell out of the sky?"  I had no answers for her and am glad that she can understand the illustrations now...

When we got to Utah, we immediately went to Cafe Rio.  We managed to find Tim at the airport and grandpa Brig picked us up and took us to Cafe Rio.  We met up with gramma and Anna there and Cyle met us there as well.  We had a great lunch and then we split up.  Kenna had a fun weekend full of witches, parties, and loads of other activities and I had man things to do.

We went up to Cyle's house for a little bit and waited for Webster's mom to drop him off (true story).  Once we had our full entourage, we went to the airport to pick up Tyler.  The five of us then drove in Cyle's tiny car all the way down to Provo.  Once there, we picked up Brad and headed up to campus.  When we got there, we were amazed at what we found.  The students looked like they were 12 years old.  One guy was wearing pink pants and the rest were wearing skinny jeans.  It was a sad state of affairs.  A girl and boy had cardboard signs and were giving out free hugs and we were reluctant to even look at them because we all felt like it was an undercover sting and that we would be arrested for even talking to them because we were so old.  Our first manly errand on campus was to buy t-shirts for our kids.  We lost Webster in the bookstore but eventually found him at the candy counter spending all of his money on sweedish fish.  Then we lost Tyler as he wandered around looking for a gavel.  Then I got lost trying to find a copy of my book in the bookstore.  Eventually we got everything squared away, headed to Cafe Rio for dinner, and then headed over for the football game.

We found our old basketball court on the way to the game and discovered that Webster was the only one of us that still has the power to touch the rim. I captured this action shot for posterity.
The game was lots of fun.  We ended up being in the Boise State fan section, which made the game even more fun.  Cyle bonded with them all by telling a very entertaining story about the time he "accidentally" ended up in a gay bar and Tyler bonded by explaining to them all how he thought that the new targeting rules covered the NCAA's liability pretty well.  Webster, Tim, and I payed attention to the game and we had a good time heckling the Boise State fans and our own kicker.  I hate BYU's kicker.

We even managed to find Jimmy by the end of the game.

We crashed at Brad's place that night.  We had dreams of sleeping in, but it turns out that everyone with a job or child is hard wired to get up at 7, even when we don't have kids or a job that wake us up.  We all went to our favorite french toast place, Kneeders, and we had fun telling Tyler stories because his brother in law met us there.  We imparted all of our wisdom to him in about 10 minutes and told him to enjoy college.  We sure did.

Then it was on to the main event.  Cyle found a place for us to go and play paintball.  Brad broke out his old army locker and we each got to wear some fatigues or BDU's or whatever they are called.  We were invisible!  The clothes help us feel manly and made the two noobies (Tim and Webster) look like they knew what they were doing.  When we arrived it was just the six of us, and then luckily a group of 20 year olds showed up and accepted the challenge to play us.  Tyler the lawyer talked them in to it and told them that we were not good, that in fact he was a lawyer, I was a computer guy, Webster was a programmer, Cyle was a salesman, and the other two were students.  The kids laughed and accepted the challenge to play us, but Tyler didn't mention that Brad and Cyle had served tours in Iraq.

We played the first game and went all out on them.  Brad has a death wish when playing paintball and charges people with no regard for his own life.  We shot each of them in the first game and didn't lose a single person.  When the game ended they ran up to Tyler and called him a liar.  After that, we proceeded to play 4 hours of paintball with these 20 year olds and we discovered that we could waste a lot more paintballs than they could because we all had jobs that could pay for paintballs and the 20 year olds could not.  After whipping them 15 times, they finally gave up.  We all celebrated with Red Robin burgers, where we learned that Tim looks the oldest, Brad looks the youngest, and that the bathroom will henceforth be known as the "chamber of commerce".

All good things come to an end.  We split up that night after a lot of ibprofun and football at Cyle's house.  It was a lot of fun to see all my old friends and I consider myself #blessed to have such a great set of roommates.  We flew home on Sunday after a quick stint of church with gramma and Anna and I felt like I needed a weekend to recover from the weekend.  The good news is, we decided to make it an annual event!  Here is to next year.

I'm a Slacker

I realize that it has been more than 6 weeks since my last blog.  By way of apologizing I combed through our home videos and have a bunch to post.
Kenna got fairies fro her birthday from Grandma and Grandpa and spend a week flying around the house like this...

So, what has happened since the beginning of September?  Kenna took a month long gymnastics class through our city gym.  She learned how to do hand stands against the wall, pull herself up and flip over a bar, walk the balance beam, somersault and do a sort of cartwheel.  She really liked it and her teacher said she had a lot of natural talent.  This month she is doing an art class for divas.  It involves a lot of jewels and sparkles.  Their theme is the tree of life and she is working on a few motifs. She loves it.  She also recently told me that when she grows up she wants to be a rockstar and play the harp.  We will see if the gym offers those classes.

Kenna is doing really well in preschool.  The other day she was rhyming random words in the bathtub and said, "Mom, I'm almost getting ready for preschool.  I'm so exciting!"  She still makes a few mistakes in her language that I love and can't quite stand to correct yet.  Instead of "years" she says "ears" so if something lasts for a long time it lasts for "ears and ears."  She is still sweet as can be.  The other night when Nate got home a bit later she told him, "Daddy I missed you today.  Lets talk.  Let's just hang out and talk."  Which they did.  She is as stubborn as she is sweet.  I have to work hard not to turn things into a battle of will so I've learned if I just stay really calm things don't escalate.  She has lots of her own opinions, especially when it comes to clothes.  She's taken to picking out her own clothes and will come down completely dressed in the mornings.  She only wears skirts or dresses and she only wears pretty colors.  He logic goes something like this - for things to match they all have to be the same color.  Pink leggings, pink skirt, pink shirt, pink sweater.  Or, polka dots on her leggings, dress, and sweater.  We're working on matching.  I bought her some clothes for fall the other day and they were cute, I thought.  However, I was informed that "gray is just not a pretty color."  My mistake.  Kenna has also started to give me fashion advice that goes something like this: "Mom I like your shirt but I don't like your pants.  Brown is not a pretty color."  I don't mind too much because she will also randomly say things like, "Wow mom! You look so pretty!"  She is tender hearted and sweet as can be and I hope she never changes.

Callie has had a growth explosion over the last few weeks.  She went from going the Mogli crawl to wearing shoes and walking everywhere she goes.  She doesn't like shoes and will kick them off when she gets a chance but let's face it, there are some places that shoes must be warn.  The little stink still refuses to say 'dada' and says 'mama' instead.  She has a pretty good repertoire but all her words sound the same.  She says some form of buh/bah for bye bye, up, bottle and bite; muh for more; keakah for Kenna; gaga for dollie and various other babbles that I am still trying to assign words to.  She is starting to use a fork and thinks she is such a big girl when she does.  The child eats almost nonstop.  When she is at Lixi's house she know I pack snacks in my diaper bag and will just start pulling things out till she finds what she wants then crawl to and adult and start saying "buh buh buh" for bites.  She LOVES dollies and carries not one, but two around with her.  She also loves to climb up and just sit in Kenna's little black chair.  She'll take some toys and hang out there.  It is the longest I have ever seen her sit still.

Callie is really smart.  I love to watch her little mind work.  Like I said, she is always eating so when the fridge is open she will crawl over to the fridge, somehow manage to get a yogurt out of the box then crawl over to me say, “guh go, guh go” (yogurt, yogurt).  She can now climb onto Kenna’s powerwheel (usually backwards) and then screams, “muhmuh! Buhbuh!” (mama, bye bye) at which point I make the car drive around the house for her.  Did I mention that she is super loud? Callie also spends a lot more time throwing balls than I remember Kenna doing.  She's pretty good at it and loves to play catch with you.  She also drives cars around more Kenna did.  She loves the little people school but and will drive it around the toy room making car sounds and filing it with all of her favorite disney figurines. She's also a great stirrer and spends a lot of time in the kitchen set stirring things.  Callie LOVES animals, especially dogs.  She will pick up little toy ducks and say, "kack kack" and she knows that dogs say "ooof ooof".  Since she doesn't know all the other noises this is the sound most other animals make as well.  She is a very happy baby and gives really good smiles, loves and slobbery open mouthed kisses.

We recently had our first torrential rain fall in months and Kenna was so excited that she put her bathing suit on and went out to play in it.  Callie also loves the rain and soon both girls and Nate were out playing in the water.

Other than that I got a new job.  I'm now working regular hours with kids instead of adults.  The break is nice and I find I actually pay attention to what the kids say when I get to go to work.  Nate got a promotion and is working longer hours.  Since my work is in the evening we sometimes has nights that involve passing each other through the front door as he gets home and I leave then passing each other again as I get home and he leaves.  It's busy but life is good.

Our friends Mike and Christina came down to visit from Oklahoma so that Nate and Mike could go to the OU vs Texas game.  Sadly, Mike’s team lost and both boys fried but we all had fun hanging out together.  We took a trip to the pumpkin patch and even ventured out to eat.  It went surprisingly well with four kids and the food was delicious.  Hopefully we will make a habit of seeing them more.

This weekend we spent time together outside doing yard work  Kenna was dressed from head to toe in pink.  Her winter coat is hot pink and her shoes are also pink.  She held the rake and pretended to be a statue as cars drove by.  She thought it was hilarious and kept asking if people thought she was a statue.  Kenna brought her stroller and dolls out and we took them for a walk around the neighborhood.

After Callie's nap we went to this wildlife rescue place with a little petting zoo and various rather tame 'wildlife'.  We got to ride a train through the park and the animals came right up to eat out of the buckets attached to the train.  Callie's head was ready to explode she was so excited.  She literally did not hold still the entire train ride.  She ran back and forth, up and down yelling "ooooh"  and "oooof" and screaming while trying to get the animals so she could touch them.  I held her over the train and let her touch the ones that got close enough.  She was in heaven.  I can't imagine what our house would be like if we had a dog.  I'd never have to play with her again.  Kenna got to touch a lemur and a baby kangaroo and ride in a barrel train with a crazy driver.  A few times we thought we might tip but Kenna just giggled the whole time.  The best part of the whole trip?  Fall is finally here and it was actually cool.
